Resilience
Resilience is an increasingly important topic. We have seen how issues of material availability during the Covid pandemic affected and disrupted supply chains, and how urban systems are increasingly vulnerable to climate extremes. The Sargent Centre has always had a strong tradition of including risk and uncertainty in models, and the challenge with resilience modelling is at least two-fold: what uncertainties to capture and how to quantify risk? In both cases, methods such as uncertainty quantification, global sensitivity analysis, optimisation under uncertainty and bilevel programming are important foundations.
Managing uncertainty in decision-making problems
Uncertainty is ubiquitous in decision-making problems across the engineering & life sciences disciplines. Whether decisions are made by governments or industrial companies, failing to incorporate uncertainty within the decision-making models that are used, can lead to undesirable outcomes regarding economic performance, safety and overall resilience. In 2021 Novartis shut down a US plant due to overestimation in gene therapy demand
