Geoffrey Maitland CBE FREng is a Professor of Energy Engineering at Imperial College London and a past President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, 2014-15. He studied Chemistry at Oxford University, where he also obtained his doctorate in Physical Chemistry. He spent 12 years as a lecturer/senior lecturer at Imperial then worked for 20 years with oilfield service company Schlumberger, where he held a number of senior technical and research management positions, before returning to a chair at Imperial in 2005. His research centres on exploiting the links between molecular/colloidal interactions and the bulk properties of materials, most recently focusing on how to decarbonise power and industrial processes through carbon capture and storage (CCUS). He directed the $70m Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Research Centre and the Shell-Imperial Digital Rocks Lab. He has been recognised with numerous awards, including Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Hutchison and Green Medals by the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and the Leverhulme Medal of the Society of Chemical Industry. He chaired the 2011 independent review of the UK Offshore Oil and Gas Regulatory Regime (‘The Maitland Report’) and was a member of the 2018 UK Government CCUS Cost Challenge Taskforce.
