Industry Collaboration
Partnerships with industry are in the Sargent Centre’s DNA. Industrial partners work with us to access new perspectives, talent, knowledge, skills or software. Whether you are interested in a short proof of concept project or a long-term strategic partnership, we encourage you to get in touch to explore what we can offer you.
Below are some examples of the types of projects we can help with, but the best way to get started is to get in touch for an initial discussion, in which we can scope a project and discuss matters such as confidentiality and intellectual property rights
- Proof of concept: Assess whether an emerging technology can be used in to address a company-specific challenge.
- Technology briefing: Provide a critical analysis of the most promising technologies in a given area and identify how it is being used across a range of industry sectors.
- Capability building: Develop and demonstrate a modelling, optimisation or control methodology to tackle a problem that is currently unsolvable or addressed poorly, or to improve decision-making.
- Training: Deliver training on a range of skills, based on industry input, including systems thinking/systems engineering, sustainability, AI and machine learning, process analytics, industrial data science, optimisation.
- Strategic partnerships: Develop the new infrastructure, software and/or workflows that are needed to transform current capabilities and practices across a connected set of objectives
- Translation: Undertake secondments or internships to facilitate the adoption of recent advances in industry
PharmaSEL
A 7-year partnership between Eli Lilly & Company, the Sargent Centre and three London-based universities to transform medicines manufacturing through novel technologies and digital approaches. Peptide drugs in particular are a fast growing type of medicine that have the potential to revolutionise the treatment of many diseases. They are much larger than typical medicines and much more difficult to manufacture, making process development slow and generating large amounts of waste. The PharmaSEL Prosperity Partnership has delivered new technologies, experimental protocols and algorithms to accelerate the design of peptide manufacturing processes and to increase their efficiency. Advances include the design of more informative experiments, design space characterisation, crystallisation protocols, property prediction including solubility and crystal structure, chromatography method development, solvent selection, peptide synthesis and much more. The partnership has been recognised by a 2023 IChemE Global Award (Pharma).
