Chemical Engineering – Imperial College London
Dr Maria Papathanasiou leads the Life Science and Process Systems Engineering Lab. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London and a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the School of Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens. She has previously held a Visiting Research Scholar appointment at Texas A&M University’s Energy Institute. Her research focuses on the development of models and algorithms from optimisation and control strategies in manufacturing and supply chains. In this context, Dr Papathanasiou is developing computer-based methodologies to accelerate process development through identification of feasible design spaces that meet the target Key Performance Indicators. A key focus in Dr Papathanasiou’s research is the identification and characterisation of uncertainty in manufacturing process performance and how this can impact supply chain resilience. Further to this, Dr Papathanasiou is investigating how data-driven approaches can enable the development and online optimisation of complex supply chains. Applications of interest include (bio-)pharmaceuticals, food and energy systems. Dr Papathansiou is the recipient of IChemE’s Junior Sargent Medal (2023), internationally recognising her excellence in computational research.
